Iron Lady: Movie Review

The Iron Lady is an account of Margaret Thatcher’s life and career. However outstanding the woman may have been, it was not translated through to this film. While accolades have been bestowed upon Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, the biggest problem is the script. It seems to focus excessively on an old, wizened, former Prime Minister who frequently hallucinates about her long dead husband and is on the onset of a full blown case of Alzheimer’s .

In fact the whole of Margaret’s life is told in choppy romantic flashbacks. We see her in her present state in just about less than 50% of the time. What’s the point of featuring the end of her life, when it is her tenure as Prime Minister, MP and wife that we’re interested in? Big mistake, that’s why it wasn’t even nominated for best picture at Oscars. A dumb move for the producers, it also makes for a dreary and boring watch.

But if you need your dose of history, Iron Lady is one bitter pill you have to swallow. 4/10

Thaipusam 2012 Pictures

This was my first Thaipusam experience after haring about it for so long. I asked my Tamil ex-colleague and he graciously took me and a couple of his friends to Batu Caves, the grandest of all Thaipusam celebrations in Malaysia. Devotees, tourists and politicians alike were all pressed up against each other in the maddening crowd. We were even rushed up the narrow 272 steps up to the cave temple.
